About Us
Every story has a beginning — ours started in 1834, when our visionary founder Philipp Wolf I introduced a simple yet powerful idea: “It is logical to protect one’s possessions by storing and safeguarding them in a fine quality case.” That belief carried WOLF from a small workshop into a global brand, built on a steadfast commitment to preserving people’s stories and the treasured jewelry and timepieces they entrust to us.
Philipp Wolf I was a jeweler and silversmith in Hanau, Germany — the historic heart of goldsmithing. He crafted everything from jewelry to cutlery in silver, but he began making presentation boxes to showcase his pieces, simply because he felt they looked better that way. Before long, he realized he’d stumbled onto something new. That insight sparked the beginning of our boxmaking tradition. Eventually, he shifted focus entirely from silversmithing to crafting exquisite boxes for fellow artisans.
Out of deep respect for tradition and family, Philipp Wolf I modeled the family crest after the Hanau coat of arms, the town where he and generations before him had grown up. Years later, WOLF would weave elements of that crest into an exclusive Spanish-made collection called “WOLF 1834.”
Two Brothers, Two Visions
Philipp Wolf III and his brother Ernst joined the family business at a young age, following in their parents’ footsteps. In 1936, Ernst — barely in his twenties — headed north to Stockholm and founded his own specialty boxmaking firm, Stockholms Etui & Koffertfabrik. Still run by his descendants today, the company is now led by Ernst’s son Robert and grandson Christopher.
Philipp Wolf III was a true innovator. Based at the WOLF factory in Malmö, Sweden, he pioneered numerous production techniques still used by WOLF to this day. Among his most iconic creations is the musical, pirouetting ballerina box — now one of the world’s most recognizable jewelry boxes.
In 1948, Philipp III acquired Håstad Mill near Lund, Sweden. There, he helped establish the Swedish Salmon and Trout Association. Even before “climate change” entered the public vocabulary, he recognized the toll of farming and human activity on rivers, fish, and waterways. That profound sense of environmental responsibility has been passed down through generations of the WOLF family, thanks to Philipp III’s foresight.
